GHANA RAILWAY DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY & SIEMENS MOBILITY PARTNER TO UPGRADE TEMA-MPAKADAN SGR SIGNALLING
The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) and Siemens Mobility have agreed on a technical upgrade of the Signalling and Telecommunication systems on the Tema-Mpakadan Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). Following a workshop in Johannesburg, the line will transition from the African Train Control System (ATCS) to the European Train Control System (ETCS), ensuring safer operations, interoperability, and readiness for Open Access freight and passenger services.
The workshop was attended by GRDA’s Acting CEO Dr. Frederick Appoh, Director Ing. Al-Amin Al-Hassan, Director Ing. Nana Kwame Owusu Ansah, and Deputy Director Ing. Samuel Obeng Asiamah. As part of the collaboration, Siemens will train GRDA engineers in Germany and South Africa to build local expertise.
The upgrade will support GRDA’s freight strategy, including new locomotives, wagons, and gantry cranes at Tema and Mpakadan. Dr. Appoh emphasized that the initiative will boost revenue, enhance safety, and position GRDA to contribute to Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy agenda.
